MUSIC AND DRAMA
ORPHEUS CLUB EVENING The rooms of the Overseas League were well filled last evening when the Orpheus Music and Dramatic Club held its second meeting of the season. Assisting artists were Messrs. 11. Davies and B. Neave, who played a cornet dit<it, and Miss Pauline Muskett and Mr. Brian Fisher Betts, who were heard in a dramatic sketch, "The Collaborators." The vocal items presented showed a well-varied selection. Barbara Cross sang a bracket of songs, "April Morn" by Batten and "Raindrops" by BanLock. Cyril Shepherd was heard in Clutsam's "1 Know of Two Bright Eyes" and Lohr's "All! Tho' the Silver Moon," while Inez Ogg sang Pergolesi's "Gentle Shepherd" and German's "Charming Chloe." The remaining vocalist was Doris Webb, who sang a group of gipsy songs by Dvorak, "Tune Thy Fiddle, Gipsy," "Songs My Mother Taught Me" and "The Heights of Tatra."
The pionaforte soloists were Avis Hill, who played "Valse Bohemienne" by Coleridge-Taylor; Betty Rosenfeldt, who contributed Rowley's "Nymphs and Shepherds"; Edna Bunting, who played Rubinstein's "Melody" and Dolmetsch's "Dragonflies"; and Lorna Frith, whose number was "Country Gardens," by Grainger. The other piano items comprised duos and a quartette. Doreen Paterson and Joyce McKean were associated in Scharwenka's "Polish Dance"; May Rowbotham and Beth Gibson played Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," arranged for two pianos'; Theo. Halpin and Hazel Palmer contributed Walton's "Valse Facade." The quartet, Bach's "Suite in D," proved an enjovable finale, l'laved bv Theo. Halpin, M rs. H. Wilson, Lucy Tripp and May Rowbotham, it received a bright and rhythmical interpretation.
