BRITISH MARKETS GOLD SHARES DULL PUBLIC APATHY TO BUDGET LONDON", April 10 It is many years sinco the public has shown such apathy at the approach of Budget day; No surprises are expected. On the contrary, the Budget is likely to contain little more than provision for a continuance of existing conditions. The greater demands of the defence services make remissions of taxation impossible, just as increased industrial profits make increases of taxation unlikely. Easter influences still hang over the stock markets. Gilt-edged Australians are well supported owing to the reinvestments of funds disbursed in paying off £44,000,000 of Treasury threes, and £12,000,000 Now South Wales fives. Industrials are inclined to sag. Rubber is better owing to an improvement in tho price of the commodity and the belief that a further advance is imminent. Gold shares are dull. The Board of Trade returns were disappointing owing to the failure to maintain last year's rate of increase, while imports remain near the high level. It must, however, be noted that a large percentage of imports are made up of raw materials, reflecting the advance in domestic recovery. The decline in cotton exports is further evidence of the unequal struggle Lancashire is waging with Japan.
