STREET LIGHTING
WAITEMATA DISTRICT POWER BOARD'S POSITION The position of the Waitemata Elec-tric-Power Board in regard to the provision of street lighting within its area was discussed by members of the board at a meeting yesterday. On the suggestion of the chairman. Mr. W. R. T. Leighton, it was decided to taave a special report on street lighting made by the board's engineer. The question was raised by Mr. E. Aldridge, who referred to the board's experiments with gaseous discharge lamps, and stressed the need for improvements in street lighting. The hoard was a purveyor of power and should take a lead in the matter. The chairman pointed out that the provision of street lighting was the responsibility of the local bodies concerned. Mr. S. E. Kennings said the time had come when the board should consider some better form of illuminating the streets. The board was a purveyor of power for street lighting, but the local bodies had uo control, although they paid for power, The result was that lighting tended to suffer J/Ocal bodies should be met and the position discussed.
Mr. G. Trevithick suggested that the board should allocate a certain proportion of its profits to local bodies for the purpose of increasing the efficiency of street lighting. Mr. A. E. H. Harrison said he was in agreement with the suggestion that power boards should co-operate with local bodies in the illumination of streets.
