DEATH AT NINETY-ONE

MRS. ELIZABETH HARROP EARLY KAWAKAWA SETTLER The death has occurred of Mrs. Elizabeth Harrop, of Newcastle Terrace, Mount Albert, aged 91. Mrs. Harrop was the widow of Mr. Edwin Harrop, formerly of Kawakawa. Her maiden name was Morgan, and she was born at Toxteth Park, Liverpool, and more than 70 years ago was married at St. Paul's Church, Princes Park, Liverpool. In 1870 Mr. and Mrs. Harrop, who had then one daughter, decided to come to New Zealand. The voyage was made in the small barque Estrella under the command of Captain Crowther. The ship carried only 19 passengers, and including the ship's company there were only 32 persons on board. The voyage round the Cape of (rood Hope occupied 117 days, and was an uneventful one.

Mr. and Mrs. Harrop settled at Kawakawa, Bay of Islands, and there they lived for 56 years until they retired to Auckland about ten years ago. Shortly before Mr. Harrop died in August, 1929, at the age of 87j Mrs. Harrop and he had celebrated the 65th anniversary of their wedding. Mrs. Harrop had never returned to England since she left it 66 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Harrop's only daughter was drowned in the Bay of Islands in 1880, and one son, Mr. E. J. Harrop, was killed in the Great War.
