FILM INTERESTS
CONTROL IN DOMINION ASSURANCE BY MR. SAVAGE [BY TELEGRAPH —I'RESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Monday The danger of New Zealand picture theatres being controlled by the Chase Bank of New York and American film interests was stressed to-day by a deputation from the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Motion Picture Exhibitors' Association, to the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage. Mr. Savage said: "We are going to run New Zealand and we don't want to be run from New York or from Australia either. We cannot afford to allow picture combinations or any other sort of combination to come to New Zealand for the purpose of controlling any service that New Zealand requires. We are not going to have it. This thing has been in an unsatisfactory position for some years, and the time has come for the Government to take a hand."
When a member of the deputation suggested that in a comparatively short timo there was a possibility of three large circuits being controlled by foreign interests, Mr. Savage said: "If picture interests or any other interests from outside were allowed to gain control it would be time for the Government to step down and allow stronger characters to take the lielin. No outside interests will govern us. That is definite."
