NEW GIANT LINER
SPEED TESTS MADE OVER 30 KNOTS RECORDED HUGE WASH THROWN OFF By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received April 19, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 18 / The Queen Mary averaged 20, 30.4 and 30 knots in the first three tests off the Isle of Arran, Scotland. In all, the liner was engaged for 12 hours in the speed tests, covering a measured mile 15 times.. Her highest speed was 32.84 knots when she was aided by a strong wind and tide.. The gigantic liner threw off a huge wash which caused waves 12 feet high to break on the foreshore. INSURANCE OF SHIP GOOD PROGRESS MADE FAVOURABLE MARKET (Received April 19. 5.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, April 18 The liner Queen Mary did not arrive in the Clyde on Thursday night as she was still carrying out a 48 hours' continuous steaming test on the way from Southampton. It was arranged that she should drop anchor last evening off Gourock, near Greenock, and that her London guests should join a special train for their journey home. In a broadcast talk from the Queen Mary, Mr. A. W. Mason, novelist, said that when the vessel was running at the regulation full speed passengers sitting in the great dining room could hardly know that the vessel was moving at all, so free was it from vibration.
Excellent progress is being made with the placing of the service risks of the Queen Mary on the London market. It is anticipated that about £3,000,000 will be covered. The balance will be borne by the Board of Trade as provided for in the scheme under which the construction of the liner was resumed.
It is reported that premium is equivalent to a net rate of 25s per £IOO for a period of 12 months. It is pointed out in shipping cirfcles that the willingness of the market to underwrite on such terms is a testimonial to the qualities of the new liner.
