OPENING OF SEASON MATCHES NEXT SATURDAY BENEFIT FOR J. LAIRD Arrangements in connection with the opening of tho season next Saturday were ditcnesed at last evening's meeting of the Auckland Rugby League, when it was decided to play a complete series of matches in the senior grade. The chairman, Mr. G. Grey Campbell, said it was proposed to assist with a portion of gate receipts for a benefit for J. Laird, who was seriously injured last season and epent months in hospital. Clubs were prepared to nssist with their gate percentages and proceeds from sales of tickets in circulation would go diiect to the benefit. It whs decided to commence the senior championshi i competition on May 2. Mr. D. Wilkie, chairman of the junior advisory board, gave details of a compulsory junior players' insurance scheme, which will be controlled by the Auckland League. Mr. Wilkio said clubs had taken up the matter with interest, and for the payment of nil increased registration fee insurance and first doctor's expenses would bo met. Mr. Campbell said the scheme had promising benefits for junior players, and the junior board would be given every assistance in the scheme. . , The New Zealand Rugby League advieed that its annual meeting would bo held on Saturday, May 2. Mr. Campbell was appointed direct delegate to net in conjunction with Mr. R. Doble. the sitting delegate. The re-registration of L. Schultz, the cxAuckland player who recently returned from England, was approved. Schultz will play for Mount Albert. A letter from the Inangaliua .League, West Coast, seeking the services this season of a prominent player-coach, was referred to the senior clubs. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY Senior Grade.—Newton v. Marist.
