STORMS IN FIJI
DAMAGE BY LIGHTNING SEVERAL, HOUSES STRUCK [from otra OWN correspondent] SUVA. April 7 Several severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain have been experienced in the Lautoka district during the past week or so. A particularly heavy storm broke on April 1, terrific crashes of thunder and severe lightning continuing fcr an hour. Telephone wires were broken and fused, and the electric light wire les.ding in to the hospital was broken, leaving the hospital without light that night. A tree in front of the courthouse was struck and split to the ground, and trees in other parts of tho town were also struck.
At the residence of Mr. Claud Israel, manager of Messrs. Morris Hedstrom, Limited, a wire leading to the sitting room was struck and a large glass chandelier was smashed to pieces.
This was the fifth thunderstorm experienced within three weeks. By tho older residents and natives thunderstorms during the summer months are regarded as an indication that the summer will pass without hurricanes, it being a popular belief that thunderstorms clear the air. This may or may not be so, but residents throughout the group are congratulating themselves that tho hurricane season (November to April) is now drawing to an end without any serious blows having occurred. This year there were two small hurricanes, but fortunately they were confined to outlying and scattered areas of the colony and the resultant damage, apart from the loss of a Chinese cutter and a Government vessel, was not serious. No lives were lost.
