TURKS' REQUEST
THE DARDANELLES DESIRE TO REFORTIFY COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME BRITISH OFFICIAL VIEW By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received April 13, 7.55 p.m.) Times Cable LONDON. April 12 The diplomatic correspondent of the Times says British official quarters state that Turkey's request for authority to refortify the Dardanelles will need careful consideration.
In the meanwhile Turkey is accorded credit for adopting the correct procedure within her rights. The Times commenting on the Turkish Note says the Powers will have many difficult points to consider. It will bo asked what guarantees can Turkey give that she will preserve the freedom of navigation through the Straits as laid down in the Lausanne Treaty?
The Constantinople correspondent of the Times says that according to the newspaper Aksham the Turkish demand covers all the demilitarised areas mentioned in Article IV. of the Straits Convention, including Imbros. Tenedos and the islands in the Sea of Marmora. It is estimated that it would cost £80,000,000 to fortify the Dardanelles against all the modern engines of war. Therefore it is expected that for the present only troops, heavy artillery and mines would bo provided.
