WELLINGTON BEATS AUCKLAND [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON. Monday Victoria University College, Wellington, defeated Auckland University College in the cricket match for (he Speight Trophy by nine wicketß at Wellington College grounds to-day. On Saturday Auckland, batting first, compiled 142 runs, and at stamps Victoria had made 174 for the loss of seven wickets On the continuation to-day Victoria College carried their total to 231, a feature of the innings being A. O. Wiren's 75 not out and J. 11. Stevens' 69. Tn their second knock Auckland made 146, leaving Victoria 58 to make for an outright vein with an ample time margin. Going in again at 3 p m., Victoria made light of the Auckland bowling. When only one run was needed Lunn was stumped by Pickmere, and Wilson. the next man, made the winning hit a minute later, the game concluding shortly after 4 o'clock.
