URGE TO TRAVEL
AMERICAN PUBLICITY TOUR BY JOURNALIST ARTICLES ON DOMINION As a special correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, Mr. Mason Warner, who arrived from Vancouver by the Aorangi yesterday, has visited many countries to write articles to create a desire for travel by American people. For the last 2J years ho has concentrated on the countries round the Pacific Ocean, and, having been to Japan, China, the Phillipine Islands and the Netherlands East Indies, now intends to tell 1,050,000 readers of the Sunday edition of the Tribune something about Australia, New Zealand. Fiji and other islands of the Southern Pacific. He expects to remain in the Dominion for about a month, and will return to the United States in September to lecture and speak over the air about his travels.
New Zealand had not enjoyed a great deal of publicity in Chicago, said Mr. Warner, although the Australian repiesentative there had done much to advertise it. As far as Australia and New Zealand were concerned, however, the people of Chicago held the view that "that is a white man's country—why go there?" They were more interested in the East and places of strange customs and unusual peoples.. "The man who can talk of the position of American politics has got something that I haven't got, ' remarked Mr. Warner, when questioned on the subject. He added that it was almost unquestionable that Mr. ltoosovelt would be renominated as President by the Democrats. Mr. Warner said the whole political situation in the United States was such that Australians and New Zealanders could not understand it unless they lived in the country. The best example of the problem was New York, which had more Irish than Dublin and more Jews than Jerusalem. There were so many rival communities within the one great community, and each nationality was jealous of the power and prestige of the other. The politicians took care of the Irish vote, the German vote and everv vote except the American vote, which was not organised.
