LOCAL BODY REFORM
OFFERS OF ASSISTANCE VOLUNTARY ACTION DESIRED A statement that very pleasing intimations had been received from local body representatives regarding the Government's plans for local body reform and the elimination of unnecessary authorities, was mado yesterday by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. JO. Parry. The encouragement he had been given since the last Municipal Conference at Napier had helped considerably in the investigations that were proceeding, the Minister said. Ho was not able at the moment to state the proposals formulated, but from the offers of cooperation and assistance that had been received, it appeared that tho question of amalgamation of some of the districts would bo more readily received than had been anticipated. "Tho pulse of the country will be thoroughly tested on the proposals," Mr. Parry added. The scheme would be quite voluntary for tho most part and every effort would be mado to bring about the desired amalgamations voluntarily. When the present sessional pressure eased, lie would be in a better position to take the matter in hand more thoroughly.
