LANDING AFTER DARK
DESCENT ON MANGERE FARM AEROPLANE NOT DAMAGED Unable to locate the aerodrome owing to failing light, Mr. A. Baines, pilot of a Spartan biplane which arrived at Mangere from Timaru shortly after dusk on Saturday evening, made a successful forced landing in a paddock on the farm of Mr. Horace Andrews in Ascot Avenue, about two and a-half miles from the aerodrome. The machine, which is owned by New Zealand Airways, Limited, of Timaru, was not damaged in any way and was flown across to the aerodrome yesterday morning. Mr. Baines, who was carrying a passenger, Mr. H. L. Grant, of Christchureh, had left Timaru at 6.45 a.m. Aero club pilots consider that Mr. Baines showed considerable skill in landing in tho fairly small field in such poor light. At the time, fences and other objects on the ground were barely distinguishable.
