ROWING EVENTS

EIGHT.OAR CONTESTS VICTORY FOR OTAGO CREW [BY TELF.GRArH —PRF.SS ASSOCIATION'] "WANGANTJI. Sunday The banks of the Wanganui -River and such vantage points as the railway bridge were crowded with spectators yesterday afternoon when the eight-oar inter-provincial and eight-oar interisland races were rowed under perfect conditions. There was only a slight breeze and scarcely a ripple on the beautiful stretch of water on which the races were rowed. For the inter-provincial race of two and a-half miles, seven crews lined up at the starting point. All got away well except Otago, which lost about half a length. At Webb's shed, with a mile covered, Wellington was leading, with Wanganui next, rowing 36 to the minute. Otago was coming through in the centre and then followed Auckland, Marlborough. East Coast and Canterbury. As the crews entered the final stretch of the journey it was seen that Wellington was still heading the field with Otago rowing strongly in second position and Wanganui closing up. One hundred yards from the finishing line it looked as if Wellington had the race well won, with Otago second, but so deceiving was the angle that the judge's placings were:—Otago, 1; Wellington, 2; Wanganui, 3. After Wanganui came Marlborough, Auckland, Canterbury, with East Coast trailing the field. The official verdict was three feet between first and second and a length between second and third. The inter-island race over a course of one and a-half miles was won by the North Island crew, which took the lead after half a mile and gradually forged ahead to win by a length. The teams were: —
