RUBBER PROSPECTS UNITED STATES CONSUMPTION The response from buyers in the commodity market to the improving tendency of the statistical situation for plantation rubber from the better working of restriction in the regulated countries of production is commented upon in a London trade report. A satisfactory feature from the market point of view is the full in native shipments from the Dutch East Indies for December, the total of 2865 tons comparing with 9260 tons for the month before and 17,806 tons in October. The fact that exports from this source last month were 5G06 tons below the permissible quota is evidently due to the drastic export duty now in force, which has presumably had the effect of rendering production in outlying districts unrcmuncrativc. Consumption in the United States for December was well up to the most optimistic expectations. December consumption was a record for that month. Total consumption in the United States for last year was also a record, amounting to 497,148 tons, against 455,997 tons the year before, and comparing with the previous highest of 467,400 tons for 1929.
