MONUMENT AT RAGLAN
RESTORATION DESIRED MAORI CHIEF'S AID RECALLED [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday The days of the Maori War were recalled at Raglan on Thursday, when a deputation waited on the Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, asking the Government to make a grant of £75 with which to repair the monument erected in memory of Wiremu Nera, one of the signatories of the Treaty of Waitangi and a great friend of the pakeha at the time of the war. It was stated that Nera, a paramount chief, had successfully used his influence to prevent an attack upon the white people of Raglan. In his memory a monument had been erected in Raglan many years ago. The stone was now in a state of disrepair, and the Raglan Old Settlers' Association desired funds with which to have it completely renovated and removed to another site. The Minister said lie would refer the request to the Minister of Internal A flairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry.
