ACCLIMATISATION WORK

FORTHCOMING CONFERENCE

COMMENTS OF MINISTER The conference that is to be held in Wellington next week among representatives of acclimatisation societies in all parts of the Dominion was discussed by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, on Saturday-. Mr. Parry will preside at the conference. Excellent work in the interests of rod and gun sport was being done by the various acclimatisation societies of the Dominion, the Minister said. Quite apart from the personal knowledge he had gained from his long association with game shooting, his taking over of Ministerial control of the Internal Affairs Department, by which the different Acts governing the sport were administered, had given him the opinion that a still greater service than that of the past could be rendered by the societies. "Connected with the societies are some keen sportsmen, who abide by the laws of the sport, and who want to see everything done to maintain the sport at a high standard," the Minister said. "But there are many loose ends of the control which cause irritation and hamper a proper maintenance of the sport for which the members of the societies pay to enjoy, i stressed many of these matters in n recent interview I had with the council of the New Zealand Acclimatisation Societv."

The aim of the conference to take place in Wellington would be to bring all "loose ends" together and to set up a more sound and a better working basis of control and expansion than had hitherto existed. The societies' representatives were with him wholeheartedly in many of the proposals he proposed to submit for discussion, Mr. Parry declared. They had been very helpful with practical suggestions and he thought he could look for the achievement of some good results. Speaking of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. Mr. Parry said that the encouragement given by the Government to the society to breed, more game birds for liberation within its territory was well deserved.
