FAILURE TO ACCOUNT
INSURANCE COLLECTOR TWO YEARS' PROBATION Charged with converting to his own use sums of £1 and £2O 16s 9d, which had been jjpeeived on terms requiring him to account to the Colonial Mutual Assurance Society, Limited, Charles Hollywood MeGee, aged 33 (Mr. Noble), pleaded guilty in the Police Court on Thursday. Senior-Detective Hall said that accused was employed by the society from January 18 until March 27 on a commission basis. It was his duty to collect premiums from policy holders and also to look for new business. Before lie was employed by the society he had to get two guarantors of £2O. On March 27 he posted his collecting book to the superintendent with a covering letter advising that he was short in his cash and that the society would have to look to the guarantors for the amount owing. ~ On March 7 accused had spent some of the society's money and on account of this he entered into some betting transactions on races to try to replace the money already spent, continued the senior-detective. The horses he backed lost and he found himself in a worse position. He received a loan of £9 from one of his guarantors, which he paid in to the society to square up his books. Later he got under the influence of liquor and tried his luck in a gambling school, losing £ll of the society's money and £3 which he expected to get in commission. Accused was convicted and discharged on the first charge and placed on probation for two years on the second. He wasi ordered to make restitution.
