OBITUARY

MRS. MARY E. STEPHENSON OLD IDENTITY OF RUSSELL [by telegraph—OWN- correspondent] I RUSSELL. Friday The death has occurred of Mrs. Mary Earle Stephenson, widow of the lata ' Mr. Henry Stephenson, at the age of I 85. The late Mrs. Stephenson was • closely associated with the old Russell j Church, in which she was baptised, i confirmed and married, and she was buried to-day in the old churchyard, j She was organist in the church for j nearly 50 years, and it was due to her efforts that the present church organ was obtained. Mrs. Stephenson was born in Russell, and was the daughter of Mr. and \ Mrs. Hanley. Her father came from 'j Kent, England, and her mother was a niece of the famous Maori chief, Tamati Wanka Nenie. As Mr. and Mrs. Stephenson owned the historic old home of the late Bishop Pompallier, Mrs. Stephenson entertained a good deal.

MB. A. E. SILCOCK [FROM OCR OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Friday The death has occurred in Hamilton of Mr. Albert Edward Silcock, at the age of 72. Mr. Silcock was born at Brightwater, Nelson, and took part as a young man in the rush to the West Coast goldfields. He was later engaged in farming at Buller. Mr. Silcock came to the Waikato in 1916 and was'farming at Horsham Downs for some years. As a member of the Waimea Rifles, Mr. Silcock took part in the pursuit of Te Kooti. He is survived by Mrs. Silcock and an adult family of seven. MRS. ELIZABETH MAR WICK [by telegraph—own correspondent] WHANGAREI. Friday The death has occurred in Whangarei of Mrs. Elizabeth Marwick, aged 85. She was one of the first white children born at Onehunga, her parents having been early settlers in that locality. Sho could recall haying watched the building of the Anglican Church, now one of the oldest landmarks on the Manukau Harbour. Later she went to live at Thames, and at the ago of 21 years married Mr. Marwick, who was a well-known personality on the goldfields, where he had several claims. He died in 1916, and Mrs. Marwick remained at Thames until seven years ago, when she came to Whangarei, where two of her children reside, y She •is survived by two sons and two daughters. MR. F. H. B. TOWNSEND [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON. Thursday The death has occurred of Mr. Frederick Harold Bartley Townsend, aged 49, a director of the firm of Townsen and Paul, fruit and produce merchants, of Wellington. Educated at Wellington College, Mr. Townsend joined the nrm on leaving school, and was we '' " n " in business and sports circles.
