GOLF TITLE

PROVINCIAL CONTEST j PLAY COMMENCES TO-DAY A REPRESENTATIVE ENTRY ' ABSENCE OF GOOD PLAYERS A large and representative entry has been received for the Auckland provincial golf championship, which will be commenced at the links today. The field, however, is probably the weakest which has contested this event for some years.

Four previous title-holders are taking part, but players of the calibre of W. A. Donald, I. MacEwan, W. S. Ralph and R. D. Wright, ftre among the absentees. The present holder of the title, B. G. Thomson, is now in business in Christchurch and it is to be regretted that he is unable to defend his title.

The lowest handicapped entrant is B. H. Menzies, on scratch, and then follows E. L. Bartleet, H. D. Brinsden and J. H. Young (1), H. B. Lusk, R. M. George, J. Glanville (Whangarei) and H. Plumley (2), A. E. Browne, R. Edmonds (Hamilton), and A. L. McLean (3).

H. F. Buckley, of Whangarei, and H. Wiggins, of Wellsford, have, along with Edmondp, been regular visitors to this tournament each year and it is pleasing to see that their names are again in the iist. Judging from past experience, it is unwise to make any prophecy as to the result before the tournament commences, as often one of the fa \ fails even to qualify. However, on recent form, Young is in a class by himself and lie Bhould be the hardest player to eliminate. Brinsden is in* clined to be a little shaky from the tees, but he is a fine match-player and can' be relied upon to give a good account of himself. Of the other lowmarkers, Bartleet is possibly the most likely winner, although any of the quailfiers will be capable of upsetting calculations. Most of the entrants have been pracy t'sing during the last day or two. Unfortunately, the course is far from its best and very few good scores have been reported. , Brinsdeu was responsible for the best round, his score of 70 being one stroke better than that of Menzies. Bartleet had a remarkably fine run to the turn, which he reached in 32, but he slipped stroke after stroke coming home and eventually finished in 76.
