River Board'? district, befng returned.soldiers or Crown tenants, the area was not included in the comprehensive scheme for draining the district, and as a consequence the drains have been neglected. Many! of the occupants have been unable to pay the ordilnarv drainage rates, and 6s Crown mortgagors the board could [not compel them to do so.
The present condition oF the drain? was s referred to afc a meeting of the Drainage Board yesterday, and a comprehensive report was received from Mr. F. Herbert.
The board decided to apply to the Government for a special grant of £SOO with which to carry out nocessarv work in the drains of the area. It was stated that the settlers, some of whom had abandoned their holdings, were not in a ■ position to finance the work themselres.
