SHEPHERD'S RESOURCE
DETAILS FROM BACK COUNTRY STATISTICIAN'S APPRECIATION [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] BLENHEIM. Friday One of the most interesting sidelights of the census that has come under the notice of the Government Statistician is a return furnished by a sheep station hand in the Marlborough back country by short-wave wireless. This man, Mr. A. J. McKenzie, supervises the back country of the Molesworth station in the locality known as Rainbow, at the headwaters of the Wairau River.
After a fruitless ride over rugged country to get a census paper his horse was knocked up. However, Mr. McKenzie is an amateur wireless enthusiast, and after hearing the schedule read over from station 2YA ho communicated with Mr. J. S. Furness, a Blenheim wireless amateur, giving the necessary data. Mr. Furness filled in a census paper on Mr. McKenxie's behalf. The document then had to be despatched to the postmaster at Waiau, in whose district Rainbow is situated.
It completed a roundabout journey when it reached the Government Statistician, who has written to Mr. Furness praising his and Mr. McKenzie's resourcefulness and initiative, which formed " a refreshing contrast to the casual and indifferent attitude of a section of the population."
