PACIFIC CABLE SCHEME The satisfactory progress of negoti® tions in regard to trie laying ot Pacific cable half a century ago followed with keen interest throug out New Zealand and Australia. _ cablegram in the New Zealand Heb of April 9, 1886, stated:— .. "The Governments of Hawai, America and Canada have promise support the Pacific Cable Syndicate ana guaranteed two millions toward th |j of construction, which the compan. _ accept. Mr. R. H. Want now P» P to open negotiations with Messrs. - . kay and Bennett for the use of Atlantic cable. It is-expected yjg rates will be 4s 6d a word for puou and Is 3d for press messages.
