ELECTRICAL APPRENTICES

APPLICATION BY COMMITTEE EXTENDED AREA REFUSED An application under the Apprentices Amendment Act, 1930, to extend the locality in which the Auckland Electrical Trades Apprenticeship Committee is authorised to exercise its powers, to include the whole of the northern industrial district, has been refused by the Arbitration Court in a reserved judgment delivered by' Mr. Justice Page. "In our opinion, the policy of the statute is to limit within a reasonable radius the locality over which an apprenticeship committee should be given jurisdiction," the judgment states. "It is, we think, impracticable for such a committee adequately and effectively to perform its duties over an area so wide as that of the whole of the northern industrial district.

"Moreover, in tho present case, it has not been shown to our satisfaction that it is the general wish of the employers and workers in the industry in such extended area that this extension should be made. For these reasons this application must be refused."
