MOTORISTS' INTERESTS
METHODS OF INSPECTORS PRACTICES CRITICISED A resolution urging the Main Highways Board to insist on the wearing of distinctive uniform caps by its inspectors was carried at last night's meeting of the council of the Automobile Association (Auckland). The president, Mr. A. Grayson, said there were too many instances of trapping by inspectors in mufti. "There are things to be said for both sides of the case, but the position is that it is almost impossible for a uniformed inspector to catch a hardened 'road hog,' " remarked Mr. M. H. Wynyard, motorists' representative on the Main Highways Board. Mr. Wynyard quoted from the board's book of instructions for inspectors, showing that the • inspectors' efforts were to be directed, on the whole, into educative rather than penalising channels. He said ho would bring the view? of the association before the board. The touring manager, Mr. It. K. Champtaloup, reported that in most districts near Auckland traffic inspectors were co-operating with road users and adopting a reasonable attitude. However, this was not the case in th« Waitemata County, where the position was most unsatisfactory. It was decided that a deputation should wait on the Waitemata County Council. A request was received from the Buckland's Beach Progressive League for support in its efforts to have the road from the Pakuranga post office to the beach put in good order. The road recently was declared a main highway. Mr. Wynyard agreed to bring the matter before the highways board.
