STORM DAMAGE REPAIRS
GOVERNMENT AID QUESTION MINISTER DEFINES POLICY [by TELEGEAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Wednesday A statement attributed to the Mayor of Takapuna, ,Mr. J. Guiniven, that Government financial aid was assured to owners of properties damaged in the last storm, is not confirmed by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash. The Minister said the policy of the Government in granting assistance for the repairing of damage from floods and storms would be to provide loans for private persons who were unable to obtain the necessary finance for themselves. These loans would be to enable the recipients to overcome their immediate difficulties. The question of assistance to local authorities, and particularly to Milford, was a different matter. There was not likely to be any financial aid, but the Government might assist in planning projects to give the maximum of permanent safety to waterfronts. Thd Minister also stated that in response to representations by Mr. W. J. Lyon, the member for Waitemata, he was having further inquiries made regarding the -storm damage at Milford.
