CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS EDEN AND EPSOM UHANGES MISS MACFARLANE'S RECORD JIY SID ET,IXI? Fine weather Inst, week-end enabled a further advanoo to bo inado with club championship fixtures, and only a few more remain to be played. At Eden and Epsom a number of surprises marked the closing stages and all titles will change hands. What was most pleasing, liowever, was the prominent part played by Mn.vson, Brown, Stevens, Gooch and Misses 15. Stewart, P. Cooke, 13. Cooke and Miss Hall, who nil participated in tho concluding rounds of the championship events. Few clubs can point to such a good record by junior players, and Eden and Epsom's high ranking among Auckland clubs should be assured for a number of years to coiuc. In tho men's singles final between A. I). Brown, bolder, and J.. T. Mayson, the firstnamed dominated the two opening sets with hard driving off both wings. Brown, indeed, was within a measurable distance of a straight-set victory, but be could not quite sustain his opening form and, as soon as he weakened, Mayson launched a well-judged attack, which gave him the next three sets. In tho. closing stages Brown's nerve and will to win seemed to desert him. while Mayson played correctly and accurately and thoroughly deserved his success over an opponent who lias been seen to better advantage. Mayson won, I—6, I—6, 6—4, 6—o, 6—l. In the ladies' singles Miss E. Stewart. recorded her most impressive success to date by defeating Miss J. Bamsay, 4 —6, 6 —4, 6 —4. Miss Bamsay held the advantage for tho first set and the greater part of the second, but in the end went down to the challenger's determination and greater agility. A. D. Brown and J. T. Mayson defeated P. E. Potter and A. McKeown, 3 —6, 6—2, 7 —5, 4 —6, 6 —3, in the men's doubles, and in the ladies' contest Misses N. Whitelaw and B. Knight beat Misses Hall and E. Stewart, 3—6, 6 —4, 6—4. The combined championship doubles lias still to be completed.
