AIRCRAFT AND MOTORS

ACTIVITY IN ENGLAND FACTORIES KEPT BUSY The exceptional activity in the aircraft and motor industries in England was described by Mr. Howard Nattrass, of Auckland, who returned by the Bangitane yesterday after two years abroad. Enormous progress had been made in the design of both aeroplanes and motor-cars in the last three or four years, he said, and the outputs of the majority of factories were booked well ahead.

"Some of the factories are working day and night, especially those connected with the aircraft engine industry," Mr. Nattrass said. There had been a boom in aircraft shares when the Government announced the expansion . of the Royal Air Force, although a falling-off tendency had been apparent more recently. The general standard of ability among motor drivers in England was criticised by Mr. Nattrass. who said that many people should not be allowed to have licences. Many of the alarming number of accidents that occurred could, be avoided if people learned to drive on their own side of the road. A large percentage of the drivers in England were reckless, however, and with the narrow roads and the very great volume of traffic, there was much congestion and accidents were frequent. A great deal was being dons by tho Minister of Transport, Mr. L. HoreBelisha, to promote safer motoring in England, however, he added. The lot of a pedestrian was nevertheless an unhappy one, and in spite of safety crossings and speed limits drivers showed little consideration.
