PIHA ACCIDENTS

SURF-BOAT MISHAPS BOY BROUGHT ASHORE Tlie club captain of the Piha Surf Life-Saving Club, Mr. H. C. Sidford, of Takapuna, received an injury to the log when the surf-boat capsized at Piha yesterday afternoon during practice. The boat had been taken out several times, and was heading out to sea again, "when it failed to ride a breaker, being carried in toward the beach instead. The briat was swamped and capsized. Mr. Sidford, who was steer-oar in the boat, had his leg cut ojien either by a rowlock or by an oar which was broken. A rtiC'l was sent out by other members of the club and the boat and its crew reached the shore without difficulty. Mr. Sidford was given first aid treatment by a member of the St. John Ambulance, and later had several stitches inserted in the wound. About half an hour prior to the accident, Mr. Sidford and Mr. E. McCafi'erv, a member of the Takapuna Surf Life-Saving Club, had gone to the assistance of a boy who was in difficulties. He had become caught in a drift toward Lion Rock. He was brought ashore little the worse for his experience. The boat captain of the Piha Surf Club, Mr. L. Wilson, was involved in an accident while acting as steer-oar in the surf-boat on Saturday. He was thrown completely out of the boat by a wave, and twisted his leg and knee fairly severely.
