LINER IN COLLISION

MISHAP TO THE AKAROA DAMAGE QUICKLY REPAIRED While proceeding down the River Thames to take on her passengers at the commencement of her voyage to New Zealand, the Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Akaroa, which arrived from London on Saturday, was involved in a collision with a collier, the London Power Company's steamer Colonel Crompton, of 1495 tons. The small steamer was struck on the port side and was beached with the assistance of a tug. The bows of the Akaroa were damaged. The impact was not a severe one, and although distinctly felt by those on board, it was not sufficient to throw them off their feet. The Akaroa went into dock at Tilbury, where temporary repairs were made, plates in her bows being replaced. A delay of only two davs was caused.

None of the passengers had joined at the time of the collision. They were notified of the delay and went aboard at Tilbury after repairs had been made, the call at Southampton being cancelled. Mails were also sent aboard at Tilburv.

The engineroom of the Colonel Crompton was flooded, but the vessel was subsequently repaired.
