SMALL POPULATION GAIN
NEW ZEALAND'S POSITION INCREASE URGENT NECESSITY [by telegraph—pbkSs association] NAPIER, Friday Commenting on the unsatisfactory position of New Zealand's population increase! at the annual meeting of the New Zealand branch of the Empire Press Union yesterday, the chairman, Sir Henry Horton, said the small gain of 9350 in the white population this year was something to be ashamed of. Forces were gathering around us that should make a substantial increase in the population one of our first objectives, said' Sir Henry. The fewer we were, tho more we tempted other nations to turn their covetous eyes to our rich empty lands. This important subject was worthy of much more attention from New Zealand editors and politicians.
