TO-DAY'S RACING EVENTS

TE AROHA MEETING / ■ OPENING PROGRAMME herries memorial cup " FOURTEEN horses engaged " review of.the prospects The To Aroha, Jockey Club's annual meeting, will be opened to-day, when the fine fields engaged should provide some highly-interesting racing. The course is in fkst-class order, having ; benefited by "recent rain, and, unless the weather becomes wet, the going should be excellent. Chief interest will be. centred in the Herries Memorial Cap, which has attracted 14 capable performers, and the issue appears very open. The win and place system of betting will be in operation. Following are details of the fields. Trith a review of ilie prospects in each jaee by " Archer" 11 50—RUAKAKA HURDLES, Of £200: about H milea

Soloist's latest form has been consistently good, ami, even though he has a substantial weight, he should make a forward showing. Sandy Dix and Prince of Orange were winners at the summer meeting at Ellerslie and both should run Well, although the Jitter might be. more at home over a longer journey. Solomon's" speed should assist him and he should be well in the picture if he jumps correctly. London has been working well and Mossvale is an improver who s'hould be equal to a solid effort. The likeliest of the others may be Tea Chat and Semiarch. The favourites may be SOLOIST, * " SANDY DIX, MOSSVALE, 12.35—WA1TOA HANDICAP.

/> Laudatory displayed winning form at Thames in January and Mesurina has recorded some useful efforts at southern meetings. Gallant Knight, who is speedy, will be having his first race sinee returning from Sydney. Gay Defence registered a firit and a third at Te Rapa last Monday and a repetition of that form should make him difficult to beat in this company. First Dance showed somo promise at Rotorua and Little Artist, who has not -raced just lately, was second to Tonnerre at Te Awamutu in December. Sweet Rose won well at Te Rapa and Hope Lass scored at Thames, where Gay 'Egypt also performed very creditably. Red Flame is an improver with a nice turn of, speed and other possibilities are Stormy Weather, Ekamii. Cyllaros and Heatherland. It should be a good betting race, with strong support for SWEET-ROSE, GAY DEFENCE, RED FLAME. 1.20 —JUVENILE HANDICAP, Of .£200: two-year-olds: 5 fur.

-Gay Chief has been very consistent and should make a forward showing; in spite of feis weight. He did not hare "the best of luck in his races at Te Rapa,. where he finished third on the second day. Golden Blonde is a smart begiimer with fine speed and Maxown has shown distinct promise, although he did not do as well as anticipated at his last start, Gay Streak is a resolute finisher who should be all the better for the rare he bad at Te Rapa on Monday. Queen's Counsel is a fine fii?v with winning form and Cricket has iron in the South, while at his last start he was second to Custos at Trenthairi. Jnver is highly promising and won well at the Takapuna meetine at EUerslie, 6inCe when he has been going nicely. Ned ♦CottleV form at Te Rapa suggests good prospects for him, and Golden Sheila ja an improver who ran third at her last start- Some who may he fajacied are INVER, CRICKET, MAXOWN.

Bracket- Mungatoon and Lagoon. Mungfltoon may have enough weight to steady him, but his owner has a good second string, the improving Lagoon, who won at Te Rapa on Monday and is bred to stay. Werohia is capable of a solid performance at the distance and Enge, who hag won at his last two starts, is at the top of his form. Gay Broney is one of the best stayers in the field and Kelly is nicely placed if he can show a return to form. Nun Ni<?er was responsible for a good effort when he finished second in the Storey Memorial Handicap last week and should run prominently, even though he has to go another furlong. Royal Appelant is one of the most improved horses in Auckland and should take a lot of beating. Happy Landing is an improving three-year-old who has won at his last three starts. He is bred to stay and will disappoint if be fails to make a forward showing. Prjnce Colossus should have a good chanr-e if he repeats his Te Rapa form. Knight of Australia is overdue for a win and he'has proved his ability to run the distance. Day Wind and Killadar are on the upgrade and both may run well with their light weights. The best supported may he HAPPY LANDING, ROYAL APPELLANT, NUN NICER.

. Kilberis won twice at Te Rapa and m in great heart, but may be steadied by his weight. Valspear is a good hack and his latest track work has indicated that he may not be lons in winning again. Mungaere is splendidly fit and a good fourth in the Waikato Hack Cup. Dombey and Teak are both capable of useful performances, and Fleetwind is qtje to show form at any time now. Supreme Court and Quaint are both winners and Clessamor is on

the upgrade. Torch won. well in novice company at his last start and should he dangerous, while Bonnie Song and Lionheart are both speedi*. The prime fancies may be VALSPEAR, FLEET WIND, CLESSAMOR. , MO—HOT SPRINGS HANDICAP, Of £2OOI 1 mile

Kelly should have good prospects if reserved far this event. Sir Abb has been working nicely, but he is touched in the wind and there is a doubt whether be is as good as formerly. After Money is capable of running a good mile and Adalene's latest form indicates that her prospects are bright. Beau Gallante and Sir Nigel are southerners who should race well, while improvers like Kilberis and Keith Lu should make forward showings in the class. Royal Secret's second at Te Rapa last Monday suggests that she will be very difficult to beat, and the l>est of i]je others may be Scotch Nation, Eoiiny Gay and Tin Lap. There may be solid support for ROYAL SECRET, ADALENE, SLR NIGEL. 4.25 CHAMPION HACK CUP, Of £3OO. ancl Cup valued at £6O; U miles

The topweights, Solaria and King Brierly., are recent winners, but they do not appeal as much as Pukeko, who was a goodi third at Te Rapa last -week and is probably a better stayer than either. Light Comedy and Mafeking are improving three-year-olds who dead-heated for first in the Waikato Hack Cup, and there is no reason why they should not run another two furlongs solidly. Tutor and Valrent have possibilities and Debhara, who defeated Pukeko over a mile at Trentham last month, is another likely three-year-old. Tidalia's latest form has been disappointing, but she is bred to stay. Vera Acre is thoroughly fit and the manner in which she has finished in her latest races suggests a good chunce for her. Te Broney is likely to run the distance right out and may be a very dangerous lightweight. The best of the remainder may be Master Musk, Arawa Rose, Con Fuoco and Pound Sterling. Popular fancies may be MAFEKING, LIGHT COMEDY," PUKEKO. S.IO—WAIHOU HANDICAP,

Bracket: Solomon and Coronis. Rereatu is thoroughly fit and should take a lot of beating, even though he is conceding weight to all the others. Refresher has been in winning form lately and Galilee is very consistent. Boughal is well and should, give a cood account of himself, and Royal Dance is an improver likely to make a forward shelving witE : - ! his handy weight. Star Artist has not been racing well, but is capable if she reproduces her best. Royal Secret and Coronis are likely lightweights. Both recorded minor placings at Te Rapa on Monday, when Coronis ran her best race for some time. Wahine Reihi and Prince Ven are also possibilities, although the latter has not done quite as well as expected in his last few starts. Some who may be in demand are ,REREATU, ROYAL DANCE, CORONIS. FINAL TRACK WORK PUKEKO GOES SOLIDLY [bt telegraph—own correspondent] TE AROHA, Friday The course proper, with the trestles 60ft. out, was used for galloping this morning. Bonnie Song ran 'three furlongs in 40s, and Royal Secret went four in 575. Armacourt covered six furlongs in 1.21. After Money beat Debhanj by half a length over six furlongs in 1.21 1-5. King Theo ran five furlongs in 1.10. Gay Defence and Cricket finished together oyer four furlong in 52 l-ss. Libra ran three furlongs in 40s, Pukeko and Te Broney went away from the seven-furlong post, being picked up by Heatherland at the five. The firstnamed was half a length in front of Heatherland at the finish, with Te Broney well back, the time being 1.32 1-5. Rereatu covered six furlongs, after easing up in the straight, in 1.26. Werohia and Mesurina finished a circuit by sprinting three furlongs in 41s. Useful work was accomplished by Royal Appellant, King Song, King Brierly, Nahlin, Kelly, Whakapara, Inver, Nun Nicer, Golden Blonde, Gay Broney and Sir Nigel.
