BRITISH DEFENCE

LABOUR CONFERENCE ; MENACE OF AGGRESSION British Wireless ET7GBY, Feb. 26 A special meeting of the National Council of Labour, representing the Trades TTnion Congress, the Labour Party and the Parliamentary Labour Party, yesterday considered the attitude to be adopted by Labour toward tfie Government's new defence programme. , Although the only decision made was one to meet again immediately after the White Paper is issued, it is understood that the majority in the Labour movement share the Tiew expressed recently by Sir Walter Citrine, chairman of-the National Council, namely:— •J c That,it may be that in pursuance of Labour's policy we may find we cannot resist a certain measure of rearmament." The newspapers state that the trades union side of the movement, at least as definitely as the political side, accepts the argument that the nations which support the collective" 1 peace system must be in a position to resist aggression from whatever quarters it may come. The Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin, is expected- to-morrow to announce an early date for the publication of his Defence White Paper and Service Esti- •*-. mates. The general defence debate, according to present arrangements, will be begun in the House of Commons on March 9. .
