Feb. 27 Bush and grass fires ravished many Victorian country areas yesterday. The losses in the western "ifcstrict were very heavy, thousands of acres of grass, miles of telephone lines and fencing being destroyed and valuable stock perishing. Search parties patrolled the shores o£ Lake Corangamite looking for the Hines family of five. Eventually they were found six miles from their house. Fires also raged in the Dandenong Ranges and in Southern Gippsland, where , they were entirely out of control yesterday owing to the oppressive weather. Heavy,rain fell to-day and quenched iihe fires.
