WHEATGROWERS' LOSS

£IOO,OOO - FLOOD DAMAGE CANTERBURY CROPS RUINED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] ASHBURTON, Thursday The loss to wheatgrowers in Ashburton County as a result of the recent rains, which were the heaviest in any February since 1914, is estimated at well over £IOO,OOO. More than half the wheat not threshed before the rain has sprouted badly, many sheaves being a solid mass of tangled shoots, said to be fit only for feed for pigs, and there are not enough pigs to eat what will be available. The opinion is held that importations of wheat at an early date are certain. One of the greatest difficulties resulting from the damage is that more than half of the growers have no seed. Merchants, likewise, are without stocks, as all the good wheat has been sent to the mills, and seeu requirements are not made up till later in the year. The crop this year lias been unusually heavy.
