DEMAND FOR TROUT OVA
EXPORTATION DISCONTINUED STOCKING DOMINION WATERS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Thuraday There is a great demand from aclimatisation societies in New Zealand, as well as from overseas, for trout ova collected at the hatchery of the Department of Internal Affairs, near the Tongariro River, Tokaanu. Referring to the discontinuance of the sending of trout ova overseas, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, said his recent visit to the Tongariro and Rotorua had convinced him that at the hatcheries there was the nucleus of splendid work being done in the interests of the fisheries. "I was not surprised to find the demand so great for ova collected there," said the Minister. "All the ova we can manage to get can be placed very profitably. It is our own waters that the Government desires to see fully stocked for the fishermen in New Zealand and visiting overseas anglers, and that policy will be adhered to. We like to oblige people overseas, but those interested. 1 am sure, will see the wisdom of keeping this country's needs well supplied." Mentioning the output of ova at the hatcheries last season, Mr. Parry said that the 7,719,000 ova collected were distributed as follows:—Soldto New Zealand acclimatisation societies, 2,260.000; sold to overseas sources, 710,000; exchanged with North Canterbury for brown trout ova, 250,000; retained for the department's own requirements, 4,499.000. Of the overseas orders, 600,000 went to Sydney, 50,000 to Hobart, 50,000 to Geelong, and 10,000 to Batavia.
