FIRE AT HOWICK

SIX-ROOMED HOUSE BURNED A six-roomed house in Vincent Street, Hp wick, owned and occupied by Mr. A. M. Callander, was destroyed by fire shoitly after three o'clock yesterday morning. One of Mr. Callander's sons awoko to find the bedroom in which he and a brother -were sleeping full of smoke and the wall near the head of his bed commencing to burn. The members of the family had to make a hurried exit, the rear part of the building being well ablaze Therti was little time to save anv of the contents, a few articles of clothing being the only things salvaged. The Howick Volunteer Fire Brigade was summoned and was quickly on the scene, but little could be done to check the spread of the fire, the flames having too strong a hold. However, the outbuildings and garage were saved, a motor-car being removed from the garage as a precautionary measure. The insurances were £250 on the house and £IOO on the furniture, both policies being with the South British office.
