BRASS BANDS' CONTEST
B GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS OF GREYMOUTH ENTRY [BY TELEGBAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] NEW PLYMOUTH. Thursday The Greymouth Municipal Band tonight won the B grade championship of New Zealand at the Dominion brass I bands' contest. The judge, Mr. A. ; Baile, said the selection from "MariI tana" was easy, but the tunefulness of the bands showed an improvement on the B grade placing at last year's contest. The Greymouth Municipal Band, through winning twice consecutively, will pass into A grade for next year's contest. Points allotted to the five ; bands competing in the B grade coini petition are as follows, the figures i being for the first and second tests ' and total: —Greymouth Municipal, 1-44, 143 —287; Taranaki Regimental-New Plymouth Citizens', 138, 140 —2<B; •Hastings Citizens', 136, 135 —271; Wellington Boys' Institute, 130, 131 —261; Waitara Municipal, 128, 126—254. Other competitions resulted aa follows: — B Flat Cornet Solo. —J. Storrie (Invercargill), 93 points, 1; T. Bassett (St. Kilda), 91, 2; E. Smith (Timaru), and 11. Simpson (Woojston), 90, 3. Twenty-eight competed. Trombone Trio. —Woolston, 89 points, 1; St. Kilda Municipal, 87, 2; Port Nicholson Silver, 86, 3. E Flat Tenor Horn Solo.—L. Scrivenor (Woolston),'93 points, 1; A. Buck (Wellington Boys' Institute), 92, 2;, C: E. Wood (Taranaki Regimental), T. Ormrod (Port Nicholson), A. Williams (l)annevirke Municipal) and L. Halls (Greymouth Municipal), equal, 91. 3. "It is rarely in New Zealand that we hear so many artists on the tenor horn," said the judge, Mr. T. Gray. High praise was given Mr. Scrivenor, the judge saying he was an artist in every sense of the word.
