CHRISTCHURCH TRAMS
VACANCY ON THE BOARD FAIR ATTITUDE OF LABOUR [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] . CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday The Rev. F. T. Read was yesterday appointed to the vacant seat on the Christchurch Tramway Board. The vacancy was created by the resignation, owing to ill-health, of Mr. C. E. Jones, the only Citizens' Association candidate on the board. The Act provides that the board shall elect by ballot a member to fill any such vacancy, and the Labour majority on the board could legally have appointed another Labour member. However, the board decided to allow the seat to go to the Citizens' Association, and the association nominated Mr. M. E. Lyons. The board said Mr. Lyons was not acceptable, and elected Mr. Read, who represents the Citizens' Association on the Hospital Board. He is a past president of the Returned Soldiers' Association.
