SERIOUS CHARGE

Tuesday Despite .an appe;il for dismissal of the case on the ground that there was no evidence of indecency, Victor James Cahiil, a grocery manager, aged 38, who was charged on five counts with indecent assault on males, was committed for trial at the next Supreme Court sessions, by Messrs. F. A. Jones and F. J. Hosking, J.P.'s, at the Dargaville Police Court to-day. Five boys, four of whom worked for accused, gave evidence of thrashings given by accused, but said he had not interfered with them in any other way. and had told them he was making them tough. Mr. Astley, for accused, asked for the dismissal of the case. He was confident that if it went to the Supreme Court it would be thrown out by the grand jury. Mr. Jones said the Bench would not entertain tlie application and committed accused, who pleaded not guilty, to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed in accused's own surety of £l5O and another of the same amount.
