MOTOR-CYCLE RACES
OHOPE BEACH EVENTS RECORD ATTEMPT FAILS [by telegraph—own correspondent] WHAKATAXE, Monday The Mercury Bay Auto Club held its first motor-cyc-le meeting at Ohope Beach during the week-end, the meeting being very successful. The beach was slightly heavy, and W. Gray failed to break the beach record. The attempt was over two flying half-miles in opposite directions. The first half-mile was covered in 20a and the second in 21 l-ss, making an average of 20 l-10s for the dis tance, or 89 miles an hour. The first event was a half-mile speed trial for assessing the handicaps. The following were the riders and the times they registered:—J. Fox (Tauranga), 3J Norton, 29 4-s_s; W McLeod (Tauranga), 3i Norton, 31 l-ss; H._ Dean (Tauranga), 3i Norton, .355; R. Whittle (Whakatane), 2J Velocette, 325; J. Kay (Rotorua), 3} 8.5.A., 39 4-ss; W. Gray (Rotorua), 3* Norton, 29 4-ss. Results of the other events were:— Three Mile Handicap, six laps.—W. Gray, scr, 1; J. Fox, Bs, 2; R. Whittle, 12s, 3. Two Miles Handicap, four laps.—J. Fox, 12s, 1; R. "Whittle, 15s, 2; W. Gray, scr, 3. Five Miles Handicap, 10 laps.—W. McLeod, ss. 1; J. Fox, ss, 2; A. Moore, 20s, 3. Six Miles Handicap. 12 laps.—W. Gray, scr, 1; J. Fox, ss, 2; W. McLeod, scr, 3.
