CLEANING OF STEAMER
WORKERS DECLINE TO START RATE OF PAY IN DISPUTE [BY TELEGRAPH —'PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday Men employed cleaning the hull of the Kaiwarra at Lyttelton declined to start work on Saturday unless their wages were increased from 2s to 2s 6d an hour. They argued that the ship was excessively dirty and the extra payment was in the nature of "dirt money." The men were offered an increase today but refused to start unless paid for four hours on Saturday. This request was not granted and the company put its permanent shore staff on to the work. This action was resented by the seamen and firemen on the Kaiwarra, who stopped work and declined to resumo until tho permanent men were taken off. Tho men were kept on. The Kaiwarra is timed to leave Lyttelton on Wednesday for Newcastle.
