NEW RELIEF RATES
MEN IN RURAL CENTRES INCREASE OF SIX SHILLINGS POSITION OF MINING WORKERS Local bodies in rural districts have received advice that, as from March 2, an increase will bo made in tlio wages of all country men engaged on the No. 5 scheme. The increase is an allround one of Cs a week. This brings singlo men's wages up to 17s a week for ono and a-half days' work. A married man without children will now receive 275; with one child, 31s; with two children, 355; and with three children 395. This will bring country workers up to tho same wages level as city men still engaged - on the No. 5 scheme. Telegraphing last night, the Thames correspondent of the Herald stated that the new scale will make the wages earned by men working under the Unemployment Board's mining scheme look small. These single men receive 17s Gd weekly for five days' work and it is considered inevitable that tho new scalo will induce a good many mining men to go back to No. 5 scheme. About 160 men are engaged on the mining scheme at Thames and 200 on No. 5 scheme.
