POWDER EXPLODES
FOUR MEN BUKNED
ONE IN SERIOUS CONDITION CLOTHING CATCHES FIRE [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] TAIHAPE, Friday Owing to blastiug powder accidentally igniting at the State Forest Department's plantation at Karioi this afternoon four men employed at the plantation suffered burns. Two of them were ■ admitted to the Taihape Hospital, one, Mr. C. Glen, being in a serious condition. The four men, Messrs. Glen, O. C. Jackson, A. Milne and L. C. Anton, had been using the blasting powder to split logs, and spilled a small quantity on the ground as they were putting it away. A moment later thern was an explosion, the powder having ignited by soma unknown means. ,' Mr. Glen was wearing a singlet, which caught alight and flared up. Bh was very severely burned. Mr. Jackson was attired in a thick jersey, and his'burns were much less severe. Messrs. Milne and Canton were only slightly burned. All four men were attended by Dr. Feltham, of Raetihi, and the two lastnamed returned to camp soon afterward. Messrs. . Glen and Jackson were taken to the Taihape Hospital. This evening Mr Glen's condition showed a slight improvement, but was still serious. Mr. Jackson was progressing favourablv.
