TO-DAY'S RACING PROSPECTS

WAIKATO MEETING FIRST DAY'S EVENTS STOREY MEMORIAL HANDICAP WIN AND PLACE BETTING REVIEW OF THE FIELDS The Waikato Racing Club's Summer Meeting will be opened at To Rapa today and the fine fields engaged should ensure good contests. The Storey Memorial Handicap, the chief event, in which there ft re 13 horses engaged, should prove interesting, as the field is well balanced. The win and place system of betting will be in operation •iihd there should' be sufficient runners for three, place dividends in most of the races. Following are details of the fields, -with a review of the prospects in each race by "Archer": — 12.15—TRIAL STAKES, Of £l5O and sweepstake of £3 each; special weights; 6 fur. st. lb. st. lb. Mainland displayed promise by registering a minor placing at the Takapuna meeting at Ellerslie and should be difficult tp beat. Orefield, Sweet Rose iind Libra have placed performances to recommend them and are capable of running good races in the class. Jan jitidd has displayed speed on the tracks ;ind Cyllaros is a nicelv-bred three-rear-old who ran a moderate third in one of his two starts last season. There are several other possibilities iind the likeliest may be Glenacre and Madelon, who have previously shaped creditably. The favourites may include MAINLAND, LIBRA, SWEET ROSE.

I.O—FRANKTON HURDLES, Of £200; .'i miles at. lb. st. lb. Tudor should be all the better for his recent racing and a repetition of his best should, make him very dangerous. Golden England and The Hiker are good fencers, but the latter has not appeared in public lately. Mossvale ciisplayed promise at Thames and is now more seasoned, so that she should have good prospects. Valorous las been making a little progress and Modern Maid, who should be all the letter for the experience, shaped well at Matamata. Curlew shows promise, tut the form of the others has not been particularly encouraging. Popular fancies may be TUDOR, SOLOIST, MOSSVALE.

-r..' T.4S—JUVENILE HANDICAP, Of £150; two-year-olds: 5 tui st. lb' st. lb. Surella and Surview are both very speedy and the former has been running on better than formerly in his latest races. Gay Streak's latest form has been good and he is a resolute finisher who. should be suited by the long straight. Ned Cuttle is a winner and Merial is a nice type of filly. Merial finished second in her first start at Matamata and should soon do hotter. Chaytor hails from Gishorne and Palustre displayed a lot of pace in her first race in spite of being very green. Abbess of Whitby has speed and Golden Sheila should now be more forward than when she raced last. Some ;who may be in demand are SURELLA, GAY STREAK, \ RULETTE.

S.JO—STOREY MEMORIAL HANDICAP, • 0i £350; 1| miles Bt. lb. «t. lb. (ray Rose . 810 Wait and See 7 4 ]Snge ... 8 6 Keith Lu . . 7 1 llun Nicer ..84 Royal Artist .70 Sinking Fond 8 0 Day Wind ..70 Scotland • •7 11 Velocipede . 7 0 Tabu-rangi' 7 7 Scotch Nation 7 0 Prince ■ Colossus 7 5

Gay Rose is in good form and should race well, although she may not find it easy with her weight. Enge is consistent and his prospects appear bright after his Rotorua Cup win, especially if the going happens to be soft. Nun Nicer is showing signs of returning to form and may bo very dangerous, even though he may bo all the better for another race. Sinking Fund and Scotland should both make forward showings and Tahurangi ran two seconds to Aussie Ra in the New Plymouth and Egmont Cups. Prince Colossus appears "to be ciose to winning form and it will not bo to his disadvantage if the track is easy. Wait and See should be prominent if she repeats her Rotorua form. Bay Wind and Velocipedo are improving young horses who should add interest to the contest. Keith Lu may also have to be considered if produced at his best, but Te Aroha reports indicate that he has not been quite himself. It should be a good betting race and some who may be fancied aro PRINCE COLOSSUS. ENGE, . NUN NICER. 3.IS—LINLEY HACK HANDICAP, Of £l6O and sweepstake of £3 each; b fur. st. lb Bt. lb Whirling ~ . 8 12 Bonnie Bong . 7 10 Triune . , 811 lorch 7 9 Grateful « « 8 8 Mr.ngukaha .*7 9 Teak . . . 8 6 Calcutta . 7 6 Gloucester ..80 Gay Defence . 7 5 Lornncre ~ . 8 0 Calahot 7 5 Clnssamor . 712 Diacquedoon 7 " Whirling ' and Triune have both shown some, form lately and they are capable of running prominently in the class. Grateful's two wins at New Plymouth, which included a defeat of Oratory, indicate that he is improved and his prospects appear bright. Teak and Gloucester are a*very likely pair and Lornacre is a good galloper of whom the best has yet to be seen. Bonnie Song's latest efforts have not reached expectations, but she may not be out of it, especially on an easy track. Torch won well in the novice claas at Ellerslie last month and Clessanror 'is- a recent winner who should do still better. Mangukaha, Diacquedoon and Calcutta have won recently, while Gay Defence and Calshot are both Bpeedy. There may be solid support for - GRATEFUL, LORNACRE, CLESSAMOR.

, " 4.O—WAIKATO HACK CUP, Of £250; 1 milo st. lb. ' st. lb. King Brierly . 9 2 Dombey ~.80 Pukelio . . . 813 Mafeking . 711 Mungacre . . 811 Snow Lap . 7 8 Leo Colossus . 8 fi Racette ... 7 7 Tutor .... 8 5 Pound Sterling 7 3 Dancing Lady 8 a Dust Dp ..70 Red Sand . . 8 3 Racefield ..70 Light Comedy 8 3 Gay Duke . 7 0 Vairent 8 8 King Brierly has Avon at his last two starts and is in great heart at present. Pukeko has performed very creditably in the South and may be very dangerous. Mungacre is well and Loo Colossus is useful when at his best. Tutor and Dancing Lady should be capable of performing creditably. Red Sand's latest form suggests that lie should be difficult to beat. Light Comedy is a likely improver and DomJjey won recently at Hawera. Vairent can run a mile right out and Mafeking is an improving three-year-old who should make his presence felt. Snow Lap and Pound Sterling are two distinct possibilities and the likeliest of the remainder may be Racette. The prime fancies may bo RED SAND, MAFEKING, POUND STERLING. 4,4S—PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. Of £225 j 6 fur. St.. lb St. lb. Refresher . > k 9 6 Tin Lap 7 8 Rereuiu "vj . 9 a Prince Ven 7 7 Galilee . . , 812 £dalene ..74 Boughal . 812 Princess Stat 7 2 . fc*i.s9 Moth . 8 1 Bellkyrian . 7 2 Gipsy Moth 7 11 King Ford 7 0 f-tar Artist 7 CoroniF 7 ° Bracket- Puss Moth and Gipsy Moth.

The top-weights, Refresher, Rereatu and Galilee, all have recent winning form to recommend thom and should run good races, although at the handicaps the preference may bo for Rereatu. Puss Moth showed signs of returning to form when ho finished second to Rereatu at Ellerslie last month and his turn may come at any time now. His prospects would be enhanced if the track happens to be soft. Gipsy Moth may feel the lack of recent racing and Star Artist's latest form has not been good, although she is capable when at her best. Tin Lap and Prince Ven are improvers who E/iould make forward showings, and likely ones among the others are Adalene, Princess Star av»d Bellkyrian. Good support may be given PUSS MOTH, REREATU, PRINCE VEN. S.3O—BEERESCOURT HACK HANDICAP. Oi £2OD and sweeps'.ake of £3 each: 7 fur. ■t. lb. - at. lb Watii:oe Reihi. 9 6 Queen Nona . 8 0 Whirling . . 812 Con Fuoco . 711 Wota:n , . 811 Polly Douglas. 710 Enlightenment 8 8 Arawa Rose . 7 6 Kilheris 41 "> La Femme Red Sand . 8 4 Noire 7 1 Vnlren' Wa'hinc Reihi has registered some solid performances this season, but may not find it easy with her weight. Whirling should not be out of it if reserved, but a better prospect may be Wotan. Good things are expected of Wotan, and, although he has not raced lately, he has been working well and should take a lot of beating. Enlightenment is in good heart and should make a forward showing, and Kilberis is another likely to be dangerous. Red Sand and Vairent should both have good chances if reserved and the best of the others may bo Arawa Rose and Con Fuoco. Investors may show a preference for
