FIRE-FIGHTERS COLLAPSE
After working continuously for three days and nights recently, the Leeds Fire Brigade subdued a fire which broke out in a wastepaper warehouse in the centre of the city and immediately beneath the new railway station. Two hundred and fifty tons of paper tied in bales were involved in the outbreak, and in their fight with the fumes from the smouldering paper firemen had to wear gas-masks. Eleven men were overcome by fumes, and received treatment in. hospital. Railway restaurant waitresses, whoso apartments were above the scene of the outbreak, left their quarters temporarily until the smoke cleared, and as a matter of precaution one of the refreshment bars was also closed.
