THE CITY MARKETS SMALLER FRUIT SUPPLIES _ PEACH SEASON CLOSING The glut of fruit which has occurred at the City Markets since the bad weather three weeks ago was less evident yesterday. The approaching end of the peach season resulted in improved values, while good prices were realised for extra choice plums, which were in short supply. A shipment of Californian oranges and grapefruit arrived by the Mariposa yesterday, and oranges eased in price. Odd chips of strawberries and a few tins of raspberries came forward. Early quinces came from Hawke's Bay and prime samples sold well, although there was not much inquiry for marked fruit. Apples improved slightly. Very large quantities, of pumpkins were available, but there was practically no demand. There were also heavy supplies of celery and 'values moved downward, while potatoes and onions still sold at low rates. Green peas and beans were in short supply and realised high prices. There was a very heavy supply ol poultry and a keen demand for prime cockerels and young drakes resulted in a slight improvement in prices. Other lines were unaltered.
