PACIFIC TRADE

Sir, —I observe that Mr. Alex. S. Tetzner is once again advocating trade with Japan, which is all to the good, but in including dairy produce among the commodities which we can export to Japan, he overlooks that Jajian herself is an exporter of butter and milk, and to all intents and purposes is selfsupporting in dairy goods, with the exception of casein, and New Zealand already supplies a substantial percentage of Japan's requirements of this material. The Japanese Government lias embarked on a programme to increase the production of dairy products substantially, and I cannot visualise any prospect of New Zealand being able to export commodities in this class to Japan for many years. Your correspondent further suggests that machinery and pumps should also figure among our exports to Japan. Mr. Tetzner is surely an optimist. These items have probably figured as exports, but in the form of scrap iron. Fxportadore.
