OBITUARY

MR. HERBERT JAMES FLAY LONG SERVICE TO FRANKLIN A well-known breeder and exhibitor of heavy daught horses and member of the Franklin County Council, Mr. Herbert James Flay, of Bombay, died in the Auckland Hospital yesterday as the result of being kicked by a horse at the Franklin Show at Pukflkohe last Saturday. He was 73 years of age. Mr. Fl ay was borri in Devonshire and when an infant came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship Bombay, arriving at Auckland on March 18, 1860. His family and a number of fellow passengers went to Bombay, where they took up holdings of 10 acres each. Mr. Flay was educated at the local school and had resided in the district all his life.

A keen participant in local body affairs, Mr. Flay served for a number of yeara 011 the former Paparata Road Board, and, before his election to the Franklin County Council in 1f26, as representative of the Dniry Riding, he was prominent in the activities of the Opaheke-Bombay-Karaka Ratepayers' Association. Since 1926 he had represented tho Drury Riding continuously 011 the council and had to contest his seat only once.

Mr. Flay was chairman of the Bombay Hall 'Committee for many years, was a former president and life member of the Bombay Rugby Club, and had served on the executive of the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Society. He was president of the Bombay Swimming Club; and took a prominent part in the Sports Club. He was at one time a member of the school committeo.

When a younger man Mr. Flay engaged in contracting as well as farming. For the past 20 years he had devoted his time solely to farming. He is survived by his wife, one son and five daughters. There are 13 grandchildren.

MR. Or. F. LINNELL [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHANG A RET. Friday The death occurred yesterday at Kaiwaka of Mr. George Forrester Linnell at the age of 92 years. He was the oldest resident of the district. Air. Linnell was born in Cheshire, and came to New Zealand as a young man. He took up sheep farming and became interested also in local body work. He represented the Kaiwaka riding on the County Council, was a justice of the peace and was keenly interested in Anglican Church work, being a lay preacher. He married Miss Mary Hull, daughter of the late Mr. Francis Hull, of Fairburn. Mrs. Linnell died some years ago. Three sons and three daughters survive.

MRS. H. D. COOPER [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] TE KUITI. Friday The death of Mrs. H. D. Cooper occurred yesterday following a short illness. Mrs. Cooper, who was before her marriage Miss Stella Whitmore Fetch, took a keen interest in social work and activities in Te Kuiti and she was a prominent" member of the Anglican Church, the Plunket Society, the Civic League and the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. At the time of her death she was ladies' president of the Te Kuiti Golf Club. Mrs. Cooper is survived by her husband, who is local manager of Dalgety and Company, Limited, and a young family. MRS. MARION BARTON [FROM our OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Friday The death occurred in Hamilton yesterday of Mrs.- Marion Barton, widow of the late Mr. C. J. W. Barton, at the age of 83 years. Mrs. Barton was the daughter of the late Mr. Henry Edgecumbe, and was born in Chittenham, Wiltshire, England. She came to New Zealand at the age of I*2, and was married to Mr. Barton at Ngaruawahia by the late Archdeacon W.\'Calder in 1879. Mrs. Barton lived all her married life in Hamilton, and as a young woman was an active church worker. She was a capable associate of her husband when he held the oflice of Mayor of the town. Mr. Barton died last year. Mrs. Barton is survived by three sons and four daughters. There are 13 grandchildren.
