CHURCH AND CIVICS
POSITION OF MINISTERS DECISION BY METHODISTS [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH. Friday Recommendations governing the taking of civic office by clergymen, as drawn up by a special committee of the Methodist Church, were adopted without discussion at the Methodist conference. The president, the Rev. E. P. Blamires, said the provisions would not be retrospective. • The provisions were that active ministers or probationers should not accept nomination for public office for which payment would be received, or which would interfere with their ministerial duties, without the consent of their quarterly meeting and the president of the conference and his committee of advice, of which the chairman of the applicant's district should be a member. If either or both of these authorities refused consent, the minister mus< tender his resignation. In all such case? the committee of advice must refer the matter to the committee of complaints and appeals, or such committee as the conference appointed to make recommendations to conference, for final decision.
